TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT

Bruxism

Bruxism is the cracking or tightening of the teeth during the night in our sleep. It occurs in people with severe stress.

It may cause:

  • Headaches
  • Pain on the muscles of the head and the lower jawbone.
  • Pain on the joint.
  • Noise on the joint when opened and closed (click).
  • Friction and damaging of teeth.
  • Fracture of teeth, fillings and prosthetic work.

Because it is difficult to quit this habit, as in most cases it is an unconscious process, it is suggested by the dentist to use a special dental splint (bruxism dental splint/dental night guard).

Bruxism dental splint

It is a hard, transparent, acrylic construction that covers all the surfaces of the upper jawbone. It is mainly used in the evening but it may also be worn during the day if the symptoms of pain are severe.

The splint prevents the teeth from closing in their usual position and it balances their pressures. This helps to relax the muscles of the head and the jawbone therefore relieving from the symptoms.

At the same time it protects the teeth from frictions and fractures.

The splint is made in the laboratory, after imprints are taken from the patient by the dentist.
